چکیده

Introduction Scanned ion beam techniques proved to be an accurate method in radiation therapy with a high degree of conformity [1]. Since 1997 the carbon ion treatment unit at GSI has treated more than 330 patients with stationary tumours using a raster scanning system. In case of moving organs, however, it is necessary to mitigate interplay between organ motion and scanned beam. In order to achieve a high conformity and a homogeneous dose distribution also for moving tumours, GSI plans to compensate the organ motion in three dimensions. A prototype compensation system was developed and has been tested in different ways [2, 3, 4].

Technical status of the 3DOMC system for therapy of moving tumours

Since 1997 cancer patients with localized tumours in the head, neck, and pelvis region were treated at the therapy unit at GSI by applying the rasterscan technique with scanned carbon ion beams [1]. In order to treat moving tumours feasibility studies have been performed, and basic functionality has been proven for lateral and longitudinal compensation separately [2,3,4]. The prototype 3DOMC sy...

3D Online Motion Compensation

In the heavy ion therapy project at GSI a C ion beam is used to apply extremely volume conformal dose distributions to cancer patients. Volume conformity means that the dose distribution is shaped precisely to the contours of the tumour taking into account all medical needs. This is achieved by dividing the target volume into small subvolumes (voxels) and optimizing the number of particles per ...

Fast Range Adaptation for Heavy-Ion Therapy of Moving Organs

At GSI we are presently developing an alternative method for a very fast (in order of few ms) range adaptation for radiotherapy of moving organs [1] with scanned ion beams to the existing 3D online motion compensation (3DOMC) [2] system. The range adaptation can be achieved by deflecting the ion beam (with the energy E0, see Fig.1) to different positions on a static wedge-shaped energy degrader...

Upgrade of the therapy control system for on-line dose compensation

Beam tracking is the potentially most conformal motion mitigation technique in scanned ion beam therapy. For translational motion, beam tracking has been shown to be feasible precisely [1]. If rotational or even deformable motion is present, dose deposition changes even if beam tracking is applied because beam tracking adapts the Bragg peak position only. Dose deposition to other regions, mainl...
